One warm Spring evening, we were guided past the warm stone dining area, past the paper cranes and Japanese wallpaper and out into the courtyard. There, white French wire chairs and tables greeted us with their curly feet. This cocotte is truly a wonderful melting pot of bold, hearty French flavours and the delicate subtlety of Japanese cuisine. Cilantro, Cafe Crawler and I opened the pages of Cocotte Dining.
Our first plate was the Organic Marinated Tofu Salad, Wakame and Daikon Salad – fresh luscious bites of tofu, fresh leaves with gelatinous wakame, all lightly coated in a tangy, tart and sweet dressing.
The next plate was the Seared Hokkaido Scallops topped with Soba Kernels and Edamame Salad in a Preserved Lemon Dressing. The scallops were seared to perfection with the added crunchy edamame and soba kernels, tang of fennel and palate cleansing lemon dressing.
Our first chosen main was the Tempura Prawns and Vegetables – large fresh prawns with slices of eggplant, capsicum, carrot and onion, coated in a crisp panko crust, accompanied by wasabi mayonnaise and dashi sauces.
Our clincher for the night was the Tempura Zucchini Flowers stuffed Soybean and Goats Cheese Curd, upon poached Spring Vegetables, Blood Orange and Pistachio Gnocchi and Sherry Mushroom and Tomato Sauce. Breaking open the light crisp shell, revealed a deliciously savoury filling of creamy goats cheese and miso with the sweet zucchini flower. The baby vegetables of carrot, brussel sprout, bean and radish were delightful fresh counterparts to the fluffy earthy gnocchi and rich sherry, tomato and mushroom sauce.
