A breath of new life and a change in wind has washed over the main shopping districts of Runcorn. The pronounced establishment of Warrigal Square has redirected crowds from Sunnybank, allowing the expansion of this exciting food affair. One of which, aptly dubbed, ‘lotus’ is Ren Japanese Restaurant.
It’s smooth ashen stone walls, chestnut tones and delicate Japanese trinkets set the dining scene.
With a menu to impress, filled with various sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, udon soups, cold soba, salads, protein mains and regular specials, there’s an offering for everyone.
The green tea is often a telltale sign of the quality and authenticity of the food. Here, the delicate cups of green tea were warming and fragrant.
Chobani and I were in the mood for sushi. To start, the Salmon and Avocado Roll filled with moorish slices of fresh salmon and avocado wrapped in rice. The rice was finished a torching, and the added smokiness to the rice, accentuated the overall flavour of the sushi.
Next, was the Aburi Salmon and Scallop Sushi. Fresh sweet scallop pieces wrapped with cucumber and topped with seared slices of salmon, red onion and micro-herbs. Beautiful, delicate and delicious.
Then, a palette of ornate Nigiri, delicately sliced and seared on top of a well formed cushion of rice. This seafood plate consisted of Eel, Tuna, Prawn, Scallop, Kingfish, Salmon and Yellowtail.
We finished the sushi rendezvous with a standard California Roll filled with crabmeat, mayonnaise, avocado and cucumber. Not too heavy with the mayonnaise and the rice was well seasoned.
For Mum, the Bento Box of Teriyaki Chicken and Vegetables, Miso Soup, Pickled Radish, Pasta Salad and Anchovy Salad. A variation of the traditional bento box, but just as succulent and satisfying.
Ren Japanese Restaurant sets the standard for classy Japanese dining with fresh and beautifully presented food. A keeper.
