When working at Tweed Heads, many of my co-workers raved about this Japanese noodle place at Coolangatta – and one night, all was revealed. In a bustling corner filled with tables of customers, efficient waiters and waitresses and gorgeous smells of Shoyu, Miso with spicy hints of Katsu curry. Without having reservations, we wrote our names up on the board and didn’t wait too long before they created a table for 8.
I opened to my colourful menu book and was amazed by such an extensive menu – 1 page each dedicated to Ramen, Udon, Soba, Rice Bowls, Sushi, Appetisers … I decided on the Kakiage (vegetable tempura) Soba, Jelly ordered the Tori Karaage (fried chicken) Katsu curry and around the table, there was Ramen, Teriyaki Chicken Bowls, Edamame and Salmon Sushi. The orders promptly arrived :) The soup was sweet and flavorsome with fresh soba noodles, spring onion and fish cake. I would’ve liked the Kakiage to be a little more crisp, but I was still happy with the meal, the dining experience and appreciated that they let us split the bill for such a large group.
Unfortunately no photos were taken that night, but Red Macaron and I visited Top Noodle again. We started with a 9 piece Nigiri set of Kingfish, Tuna, Salmon, Salmon Caviar, Tomego, Unagi, Ebi, Seared Scallop and Seared Salmon Belly. The array of nigiri was impressive, especially the Salmon Caviar with its robust taste. The slices of fish were fresh but did not melt in my mouth. The Seared Scallop and Salmon were delightfully smoky and tender.
Red Macaron ordered the Tori Karaage Udon – fresh thick udon topped with crisp chicken pieces in a rich shoyu broth.
I had the Vegetarian Udon with sweet beancurd skin and wakame.
Top Noodle is an excellent Japanese eatery- generous servings, impressive meals and all light on the wallet.
